The academic community of Isabela State University – ISU Roxas Campus actively participated in the Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED) on March 12, 2026, conducted at the campus grounds in Matusalem, Roxas, Isabela. The activity aimed to strengthen disaster preparedness and raise safety awareness among students, faculty, and staff.
The training and simulation were facilitated by the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office of Roxas Isabela and the Bureau of Fire Protection Roxas Isabela, who provided orientation and practical demonstrations on proper emergency response during earthquake situations.
At the start of the drill, participants immediately performed the standard “Duck, Cover, and Hold” procedure once the emergency signal was given. Participants were also reminded to “Duck, Cover, Hold, and Pray,” emphasizing not only preparedness but also calmness and presence of mind during emergencies. As the Head of the MDRRMO emphasized during the orientation, remaining calm, following safety procedures, and having faith and presence of mind are essential in protecting lives during disasters.
After the simulated shaking, students and employees conducted an orderly evacuation from their respective classrooms and offices and proceeded to the designated assembly areas within the campus. Safety marshals and response teams monitored the evacuation process to ensure that all safety protocols were properly followed.
Personnel from MDRRMO and BFP also demonstrated basic emergency response procedures, including evacuation management and disaster awareness strategies. They stressed the importance of preparedness, cooperation, and continuous training in minimizing risks and ensuring safety in times of disasters.
The successful conduct of the earthquake drill reflects the strong partnership between the university and local disaster response agencies in building a culture of preparedness within the academic community.
This initiative supports the goals of the United Nations through Sustainable Development Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, which promotes disaster risk reduction and community resilience. It also aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education, emphasizing the importance of integrating safety awareness and life skills education within academic institutions.
Furthermore, the activity reflects the principles promoted by World Universities with Real Impact (WURI), highlighting the university’s commitment to providing real-world learning experiences that equip students with practical knowledge and preparedness skills for emergencies. Through initiatives like this, ISU continues to strengthen its role in building a disaster-resilient and socially responsible community.
