The Provincial Institute of Fisheries (PIF) and Extension and Training Unit of Isabela State University-Roxas Campus (ISU-Roxas) spearheaded the conduct of Post-harvest Fisheries Livelihood Training for Matusalem Courageous Inhabitants Association (MCIA) and Philippine National Police personnel held at PNP- Roxas Station, Roxas Isabela on October 19-20, 2022.
The said technology training is part of the PNP’s request from ISU-Roxas in collaboration with the Local Government Unit of Roxas, Isabela and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources RO2 (BFAR-R02).
The two-day training is geared to capacitate women and the association to adopt innovations in fish processing. With these activities, it is a favorable moment to enhance participants’ skills to bring innovative products which are not yet available in the market and to adapt and venture into this type of technology to help them generate income.
The opening program was graced by the presence of PMAJ Rassel Tuliao, Chief of Police PNP–Roxas signified the commitment of the PNP and the government to the MCIA. The Dean of PIF, Dr. Mary Joy L. Asprec presented and stated the opportunities for attending the training and promoted the course, Bachelor of Science in Fisheries and Aquatic Science. The training was supported by Municipal Agriculture Office and LGU duly represented by Mr. Demetrio Batuon.
The participants were trained by BFAR R02 experts on Fish processing and Value-Adding Technology.
The participants learned basic principles of proper fish management, which was discussed by Ma’am Zenaida Ignacio, BFAR Senior Aquaculturist. Moreover, Mr. Jim Bryan Bugarin and Ms. Sharon Celino, BFAR RO2 Training Division Staff, shared their best practices about Good Manufacturing and Value-added Product Development.
Various Value-added products from Milkfish and Tilapia were produced as an output of the said training such as fish balls, fish rolls, fish nuggets, fish tocino, breaded fish sticks, and smoked fish. A total of 20 members of PNP and MCIA attended and actively participated in the said training.
Special recognitions to LGU-Roxas headed by Hon. Mayor Jonathan Jose C. Calderon who provided the snacks and lunch for the participants, speakers, and organizers, to BFAR-R02 for the technical support, PNP-Roxas for organizing such significant training for the community, and ISU-R led by Campus Administrator Dr. Eddie I. Peru.
