At the 2024 iSHARE Regional Research Conference, which took place on November 29, 2024, at the Crown Hotel in Tuguegarao City, Cagayan, Dr. Leinelie Dela Cruz Balagan, PhD, RGC, accomplished a significant milestone for Isabela State University-Roxas Campus by receiving recognition for her research paper, “Peer Pressure and Substance Influence: A Phenomenological Study of Drug Use Vulnerabilities.” The paper was recognized as one of the Best Research Papers and took first place out of nine entries from various HEIs in the Professional Category.

The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Regional Office 02 organized the event, which had as its theme “Innovative Showcases of Academic Research Engagement for a Drug-Free Community,” to highlight innovative research projects that address societal issues, particularly those pertaining to drug abuse prevention and education.

Dr. Balagan’s groundbreaking research delves into the complex interaction between peer pressure and substance use, providing insights into the underlying vulnerabilities influencing drug use behavior. Her work significantly advances our knowledge of and capacity to handle drug-related issues in communities while demonstrating the efficacy of education and intervention initiatives.

In addition to Dr. Balaganโ€™s individual award, the Isabela State University-Roxas Campus was also honored with a Plaque of Appreciation for its outstanding commitment to research and academic excellence. The universityโ€™s consistent efforts to foster a research-driven culture and produce meaningful academic contributions were lauded during the conference.

The recognized study supports various of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) established by the UN. It specifically supports SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being by addressing the vulnerabilities to substance addiction and emphasizing the importance of preventive education and interventions. The study also advances SDG 4: Quality Education by emphasizing the ways in which educational establishments can employ innovative research and initiatives to increase public awareness and foster a drug-free environment.

The conference theme and ISU-Roxas Campus’s award emphasize the alignment with SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions by addressing substance-related vulnerabilities and creating safer communities. Through collaborative research and institutional commitment, ISU remains a model for combining academic success with social responsibility, advancing these worldwide objectives for a sustainable future.
