On March 12, 2025, the College of Criminal Justice Education (CCJE) at Isabela State University – Roxas (ISUR) Campus hosted a successful Self-Defense Training for Women and Vulnerable Groups at Xentro Mall in Rizal, Roxas, Isabela. This event was part of the university’s observance of National Women’s Month. Participants included members of the Philippine National Police (PNP) – Roxas MPS, Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) – MFS, Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) – Roxas District Office, as well as faculty, staff, and students from ISUR.

This initiative aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) focused on Gender Equality and Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions. The training aimed to raise awareness about legal protections for women and vulnerable individuals, provide essential knowledge on self-defense rights, and equip participants with practical skills to prevent and respond to potential threats. Through this program, the university reaffirmed its commitment to human rights, community safety, and gender sensitivity.

Before the main training sessions, PCPT Manuel T. Bulanadi, Admin PCO of Roxas Police Station, shared valuable insights on women’s rights and the significance of National Women’s Month. He emphasized the importance of empowering women through education, legal awareness, and self-defense training, highlighting the role of law enforcement in providing gender-responsive protection. A key highlight of the event was a discussion led by Dr. Nelmar P. Agub, Program Chair of BS Criminology, on legal rights in self-defense, recognizing and escaping dangerous situations, and protecting oneself from attackers. Dr. Agub stressed the importance of understanding self-defense laws, identifying threats, and making informed decisions in perilous situations. His session provided valuable insights into the legal framework surrounding self-defense, including the circumstances under which it can be lawfully exercised.

Following this, PCMS Mario V. Cortez, Senior CAD PNCO of Roxas Police Station, conducted a hands-on training session on basic self-defense techniques. Participants learned fundamental defensive stances, striking techniques, evasion moves, and effective escape strategies. The session focused on practical, easy-to-learn techniques that can be applied in real-life scenarios, empowering attendees with the confidence to protect themselves against potential threats. The interactive nature of the training allowed participants to practice these techniques under the supervision of experienced trainers, ensuring proper execution and application.
