Roxas, Isabela – The 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women and Children (VAWC) concluded with a resounding call to action at the Don Delfin B. Albano Memorial Gymnasium in Matusalem, Roxas, Isabela on December 10, 2024. The event, themed “VAW Bigyang Wakas. Ngayon na ang Oras,” brought together students, faculty, staff, and community members to raise awareness and advocate for a violence-free society.

 

The day began with a symbolic Solidarity Walk, a visual representation of unity against VAWC. Participants, composed of students, faculty, staff, and community members, marched together, their collective presence sending a strong message of hope and solidarity.

Following the walk, the gymnasium buzzed with anticipation as the program commenced. Esteemed speakers, including Assoc. Prof. Charibel R. Sarte, Campus Academic Affairs Director; Assoc. Prof. Rosalyn L. Bautista, Campus Administrator, thru Assoc. Prof. Erdelito Agapito; Hon. Manuel Faustino “King” U. Dy, Board Member delivered inspiring keynote speeches that shed light on the pervasive issue of VAWC. Their words resonated with the audience, urging them to take action and challenge societal norms that perpetuate violence.

Experts, including PCapt. Jason Martinez, Atty. Cheryl P. Malana, Atty. David S. Salibad, JR., and Dr. Christine Joyce C. Maluyo, shared their insights on various aspects of VAWC, from legal perspectives to health implications. Their presentations provided a comprehensive understanding of the issue, empowering the audience with knowledge and tools to combat violence.

The event was not only informative but also entertaining, with talented students showcasing their artistic abilities through captivating performances. Their powerful messages conveyed through music, dance, and poetry, resonated with the audience, inspiring hope and empathy.

Panel discussions also brought together key stakeholders to delve deeper into the complexities of VAWC and explore effective strategies for prevention and response. The exchange of ideas and experiences fostered collaboration and strengthened the community’s collective efforts.

This initiative directly aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By promoting gender equality and empowering women and girls, the event contributes to SDG 5: Gender Equality. By addressing the health impacts of VAWC, the event contributes to SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being. And finally, by focusing on addressing violence against women and children, the event aligns with SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions.

The 18-Day Campaign to End VAWC was more than just an event; it was a movement. By raising awareness, empowering survivors, and promoting gender equality, the university and the community took a significant step towards creating a safer and more just society. This event served as a reminder that the fight against VAWC is a collective responsibility, and by working together, we can create a future free from violence.
