On April 2024, Oplan Kalikasan (KAlingkod sa Layuning Itaguyod ang KAhalagahan ng KALIKASAN) was launched by the NSTP students of Isabela State University Roxas Campus Agritec, focusing on nature conservation and reforestation. The initiative, aligned with the university’s commitment to environmental sustainability, aimed to instill a sense of responsibility among students for the preservation and protection of natural resources, particularly in the face of climate change.
Key activities included the adoption and planting of native tree species, with students assigned specific areas to care for. These adopted areas became the students’ responsibility, and they were expected to ensure the long-term survival of the trees by performing regular monitoring, watering, and other maintenance efforts. The goal was to promote personal accountability while fostering a direct connection to the environment.
In addition to tree planting, Oplan Kalikasan offered educational sessions focused on environmental protection, biodiversity conservation, and the urgency of addressing climate-related challenges. These discussions provided students with deeper insights into how reforestation can combat global warming, prevent soil erosion, and enhance biodiversity in their local areas. The program encouraged students to actively participate in safeguarding the environment, both in action and awareness.
By participating in this initiative, students not only contributed to local conservation efforts but also supported global objectives. Oplan Kalikasan directly aligns with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The activities address Goal 13: Climate Action by promoting reforestation as a means to reduce carbon emissions and enhance climate resilience. They also support Goal 15: Life on Land, as reforestation helps restore degraded ecosystems and promotes the sustainable management of terrestrial resources, vital for the survival of diverse wildlife and plant species. The educational component of the initiative contributes to Goal 4: Quality Education, equipping students with knowledge and skills to address environmental challenges. Furthermore, the project enhances Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities by creating greener spaces, fostering urban resilience, and improving environmental sustainability within local communities.
Through this holistic approach, Oplan Kalikasan not only prepares students to become environmental stewards but also contributes to the global mission of building a sustainable future. The initiative empowers students to be leaders in climate action and custodians of the natural environment, ensuring their efforts create lasting impacts both locally and globally.
