In alignment with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), the College of Criminal Justice Education (CCJE) organized a Fire Prevention Seminar and Earthquake Drill in collaboration with the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Roxas Fire Station. The event aimed to enhance awareness, preparedness, and response strategies among faculty, staff, and students in fire and earthquake emergencies.

The seminar commenced at the ISUR Gymnasium with an invocation, followed by the singing of the hymn and the national anthem. The event began with a welcome address by the College Secretary, Ms. Redelyn Dupaya, who warmly greeted all participants and guests. Moreover, Dr. Nelmar P. Agub, Program Chair of BS Criminology, emphasized the significance of fire safety and preparedness in his opening remarks, highlighting its direct impact on public safety and well-being. Mr. Jeherson Deriza then introduced the personnel from the BFP Roxas Fire Station, who would serve as resource speakers for the event.

FO3 Brennan Bumanglag provided an overview of fire safety and suppression, followed by FO1 Christelle Joi Lamug, who engaged the participants with an interactive discussion on fire concepts, the fire tetrahedron, and the four basic methods of extinguishing a fire. A demonstration was conducted by FO1 Abdul Halim Macaraob and FO1 Judy Ann Ignacio, who explained the proper use of a fire extinguisher using the TPASS method to ensure efficient fire response. FO1 Angelica Lim elaborated on the different classes of fires (Class A, B, C, D, and K) and their potential causes, promoting awareness of fire hazards in various environments. FO1 Jay Anne Cagurangan provided valuable insights into emergency response strategies in case of fire, stressing the importance of preparedness and quick decision-making.

During the open forum, participants from various departments raised questions regarding landlords’ responsibilities in fire incidents, BFP emergency hotlines and social media platforms, and the penalties for prank callers. These concerns were addressed by the BFP personnel, reinforcing the importance of public cooperation in emergency situations. Additionally, participants were given hands-on experience using fire extinguishers and fire hoses, equipping them with practical skills in fire suppression. To further strengthen disaster preparedness, the BFP personnel facilitated an earthquake drill, demonstrating proper evacuation procedures and safety measures to minimize risks during seismic events.

Ms. Medelyn S. Lacunsay, Program Chair of BSLEA, delivered the closing remarks, expressing gratitude to all attendees and reiterating that fire and disaster preparedness is a shared responsibility. The event successfully aligned with SDG 3 and SDG 11 by promoting a safer and more resilient community through knowledge dissemination and hands-on training. This initiative has reinforced the commitment of ISUR to fostering a culture of safety, awareness, and preparedness among students and staff, ensuring a proactive approach to emergency response.
