On December 9, 2024, the Isabela State University Roxas Campus’ Office of Planning, Management of Information and Services, Gender and Development (PMISGAD), and the Extension and Training Services, under the leadership of Prof. Joey C. Cereno, in collaboration with the Guidance Services, Junior Life Coaches (JLC), and ISUR-Kalikasan, conducted an inspiring and impactful program for the students of Nuesa Elementary School and the elders of Barangay Nueza. The program began with a flag-raising ceremony, uniting students, teachers, and stakeholders. On behalf of the school principal, Ms. Mercedita G. Apolonio, Dr. Merly G. Aggabao delivered an inspirational message and expressed gratitude for selecting their school as the recipient of the outreach initiative, and Mr. Arjay Esquivel, the school PTA  (Parent Teacher Association) President also expressed his appreciation for having chosen their children to experience this meaningful and creative learning activity.

The “Arts and Storytelling Workshop for Children” opened with a prayer by Mr. Regie Servitillo, setting a reflective and hopeful tone. The workshop, facilitated by Junior Life Coaches, aimed to promote a non-violent society, foster mental health awareness, and teach values of empathy and kindness among Grade 3 students. Through interactive storytelling, creative arts projects, and group discussions, the children gained a deeper understanding of the different forms of violence, their impacts, and the importance of cultivating positive relationships. Divided into groups, the students expressed their learning through artworks and stories, emphasizing the values of peace, resilience, and community.

This activity’s impact aligns with SDG 4: Quality Education, as it encouraged inclusive and equitable learning while promoting critical thinking, creativity, and awareness of societal issues. Furthermore, by addressing violence and mental health, the workshop supported SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, fostering a safe and empathetic environment for children.

The event concluded with the awarding of certificates to the students and facilitators, along with tokens like toys and storybooks to commemorate the children’s participation and engagement. These gestures underscored the program’s commitment to empowering the younger generation and creating a violence-free, supportive society.

Simultaneously, a seminar for the elders was conducted, led by Dr. Leinelie dela Cruz Balagan, with support from student facilitators and ISUR-Kalikasan officers. The session focused on mental health awareness, resilience building, and problem-solving strategies. The seminar had a profound impact on the elders, many of whom had demonstrated remarkable resilience in the aftermath of recent calamities that devastated their barangay. Despite these challenges, the elders showed optimism, faith, and strong social ties, which were key factors in their coping mechanisms.

Discussions revolved around stress management, enhancing emotional well-being, and strengthening social support systems, empowering the elders with tools to improve their quality of life. By addressing these areas, the seminar significantly contributed to SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being, particularly in promoting mental health and emotional resilience among vulnerable populations.

The open forum allowed participants to share their personal experiences, fostering a sense of community and mutual support. This camaraderie reflects SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, as the program helped strengthen social cohesion and disaster resilience at the community level.

The program’s success lies in its collaborative framework, involving ISU-Roxas, Junior Life Coaches, ISUR-Kalikasan, and local stakeholders. This partnership exemplified the spirit of SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, showcasing how multi-stakeholder efforts can effectively address community-specific needs.

Furthermore, the inclusion of gender-sensitive approaches through PMISGAD reflects a commitment to SDG 5: Gender Equality, ensuring that all individuals, regardless of age or gender, benefit from the program.

The outreach program for Barangay Nueza profoundly impacted the students and elders by addressing mental health, fostering resilience, and promoting peace and empathy. It demonstrated the power of education, community engagement, and collaboration in achieving sustainable development. This initiative serves as a model for how sustainable governance principles can create lasting change, contributing to healthier, more resilient, and empowered communities.
